Jozani, Prison Island and the Mnemba marine reserve all charge separate per-person park fees. A tour that looks $15 cheaper often is not once you have paid $30 at the gate. The best listings state the fees explicitly.
Stone Town, the spice farm and Prison Island are usually sold as one full day for barely more than any two of them separately. The same is true of Prison Island plus the Nakupenda sandbank.
The sea is flattest and clearest before about 10:00. Afternoon departures mean chop, wind and poorer visibility for the same money.

A guided Stone Town walk starts around $20 and a spice farm tour under $20. Full-day boat trips such as Safari Blue or Prison Island plus Nakupenda run roughly $45–$95 with lunch. Fly-in mainland safaris to Mikumi or Nyerere are in a different bracket entirely, from about $450.
Usually yes, but the radius varies. Tours based in Stone Town often include free pickup only within the town and charge a supplement for the east or north coast. Check the listing before booking if you are staying far from the departure point.
Reef-safe sunscreen or a rash vest, a hat, a dry bag, reef shoes and cash for park fees and tips. Most boats supply masks and snorkels; bring your own if you are fussy about fit.
You can, and outside July–September and December–February you will usually find something. But the highest-rated operators and the small-group trips fill first, and hotel desks and beach touts charge more than the online price for the same boat.
