The Michamvi peninsula is the hook of land that closes the top of Chwaka Bay, and its geography gives it something no other part of the east coast has: a west-facing shore. Michamvi Kae, on the bay side, is the only place on this coast where you can watch the sun set into water rather than behind palm trees.
On the ocean side, off Pingwe, sits the building that has done more for Zanzibar’s image than any tourist board campaign: The Rock, a small restaurant perched on a coral outcrop in the lagoon. At low tide you walk out to it across the sand. At high tide a boat comes to collect you from the beach.
Around them, the peninsula is the quietest stretch of the developed east coast — long, empty coves, a handful of good hotels and very little else.

Drive or ride to the bay side of the peninsula in the late afternoon. Several beach bars sit on the western shore, and this is the only genuine sea-facing sunset on the east coast.
Find an empty cove
The coast between Bwejuu and Michamvi has a series of small bays that are effectively deserted outside the hotel frontages. Bring water; there is nothing there.
Kite or paddle from Bwejuu
Bwejuu, just south, has the same flat lagoon as Paje with a fraction of the traffic — better for paddleboarding and for kiters who already know what they are doing.
How to get to Michamvi & The Rock
- Michamvi is about 55 km from Stone Town — a little over an hour by road — and 20 minutes north of Paje.
- The Rock is at Pingwe, on the ocean side. Any taxi on the east coast will know it; a return trip from Paje costs a few dollars.
- Public transport is thin on the peninsula. If you are staying at Paje or Jambiani, a taxi or pikipiki is the practical way to get here.

- Reserve The Rock in advance. It seats very few people and turns walk-ins away regularly, particularly at sunset.
- Check the tide before you go — arriving at high tide without a booking means waiting for a boat.
