Mnemba is a tiny island — a kilometre and a half around — sitting inside an oval coral atoll about 3 km off the north-east corner of Unguja. The island is a private resort and closed to visitors, but the atoll around it is a marine conservation area and it is the reason people dive and snorkel in Zanzibar.
Inside the atoll the water is protected, shallow and startlingly clear, with visibility that regularly runs past 20 metres. The reef holds the full Indian Ocean cast — butterflyfish, angelfish, moray eels, parrotfish grinding at the coral, green turtles, and the occasional whale shark in the right season.
A pod of dolphins lives in the channel between the atoll and the mainland, and almost every trip looks for them on the way out. That part is genuinely wild and never guaranteed.

Snorkel the atoll
The main reason to come. Boats anchor at several sites inside the atoll depending on the tide and current. An hour or two in the water is standard, and the coral gardens on the northern side are the best of it.
Dive Kichwani or Wattabomi
For certified divers, the wall at Kichwani (down to about 30 m) and the gentle coral garden at Wattabomi are the two signature Mnemba sites. Dive centres in Nungwi, Kendwa and Matemwe run daily trips.
Look for dolphins in the channel
Spinner and bottlenose dolphins are resident in the channel. Choose an operator that keeps its distance and does not chase or drop swimmers on top of them — the pressure on this pod is real.
Sandbank stop
Most trips finish on a sandbar with fruit or a seafood lunch. It is the part everyone photographs and the part nobody expects to be the highlight.

- Boats leave from Matemwe (closest, about 20 minutes), Muyuni Beach, Nungwi and Kendwa (30–45 minutes) every morning.
- You cannot land on Mnemba island itself — it is a private resort with an exclusion zone. All trips are boat- and water-based.
- The marine conservation area charges a per-person fee. Confirm whether your tour price includes it before booking.

- Book the earliest departure available. By late morning the wind gets up, the sea chops and visibility drops.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen or, better, a rash vest. The atoll is a protected reef and conventional sunscreen damages coral.
